In this entry, a circular borne settee provides a place to perch next to the compact living room. Instead of a large, formal space, the homeowners and interior designer chose to make the living room a conversation area, furnishing it with four comfortable armchairs.

An open floor plan concept was exactly what the homeowners desired in their Arizona vacation abode. Interior designer and Phoenix Home & Garden Master of the Southwest Mary Meinz incorporated mix-and-match textiles that feature her signature shade—orange—for a vibrant contrast with the white walls and dark woodwork. The three-ring chandelier in the great room was made to complement the sparkling lighting over the dining table and kitchen island. “The owner wanted something round and light,” she says. “This intertwining idea came to us. But rather than something commonplace, it’s like jewelry to the room.”

Floating walnut “clouds” suspended from the ceiling define this kitchen and breakfast area, which opens onto the pool patio. At left, the hood’s banding echoes the lines of the great room’s fireplace surround.

This much-used outdoor living room is decorated with an eclectic mix of pieces in terra-cotta and blue, giving it a Mediterranean feel. “A vacation spot every night!” exclaims Kauffman. Plenty of seating options and lots of little drink tables make it ideal for entertaining. “I think you can go bold with things outdoors, yet it should function like an interior space,” the designer adds.

A heavy wood table, high-backed chairs with embossed leather and nailheads, and a gothic-style iron chandelier give this dining room an old-world flavor, while Native American-influenced drapery and a contemporary area rug create a sense of eclectic elegance.

Thick slabs of underlit emerald-green glass serve as a bar top and cantilevered display shelves in this Valley home. On the back wall, a portrait titled “The Bishop” adds a note of whimsy.

Interior designer Esther Boivin updated a living room fireplace with dimensional stone tile, metallic wallcovering and dramatic sconces, creating a focal point for the seating area that includes two Italian leather-and-steel sofas. Pieces of the homeowners’ art collection and a contemporary rug add vibrant color to the otherwise neutral palette.
