With more than 466 million people worldwide affected by disabling hearing loss, helpful technology can no longer fall by the wayside.1 That’s why Cochlear provides implantable hearing solutions when hearing aids no longer provide the sound clarity you deserve. As a global leader in the space, the company offers two industry-leading systems: the CochlearTM Nucleus® and CochlearTM Baha® Systems designed to help users hear and communicate with confidence and ease. Learn how Nucleus® Implants transformed Robert’s hearing — from embarrassed in the boardroom to self-confidence in new endeavors.

Q: When Did You First Experience Noticeable Hearing Loss?

A:  I believe mine was genetic. Although it’s natural to lose high-frequency hearing with age, I didn’t notice trouble hearing until one evening on a drive home from the hospital. My ears began to ring, which was unusual for me. In 1983, I began wearing hearing aids and it was a marked improvement. I was able to hear from my perspective quite well. But my hearing slowly worsened to the point that I could no longer fully enjoy going to the symphony — one of my favorite pastimes, only to see Isaac Stern play a silent violin.

Q: What Made You Decide on a Cochlear Implant?

A: Hearing aids were pretty effective until my hearing got worse over time. I quit practicing medicine in the early 2000s after I had trouble understanding what people were saying on the phone. It was at that point I knew I had to try something different. My audiologist told me about a clinical trial for what was to be the Nucleus® Hybrid TM Implant System*, which combines the amplification of a hearing aid with cochlear implant technology in one device. Believe it or not, I wasn’t deaf enough for a regular cochlear implant, but I was deaf enough to participate in the Hybrid clinical trial. The unit was fantastic. From then on, instead of saying to my kids “what did you say?” I was able to hear them.

Q: How Have Cochlear Implants Changed Your Life?

A: My hearing has dramatically improved. I believe my hearing loss began long before 1980. But back then, there was nothing to help me. At one point, I was on the board of directors for five organizations but slowly dropped off each one due to my embarrassing hearing loss. Now, with my cochlear implant, I’m back on a 501(c)(3) board’s executive committee. I tease people, saying although I’m retired, I’m busier now than when I was practicing medicine. Now, one of my favorite things to do is listen to my daughter play the harp. I can hear every single note she plays. I simply couldn’t do that before my cochlear implant. It has brought me back to life.
