Legacy Advertisers – Then & Now
Since the first issue of Phoenix Home/Garden was published in 1980, many Valley businesses have grown and evolved with us. On these pages, take a look at them then and now. What a difference four decades makes.
Debuting in Phoenix Home & Garden’s inaugural year, Hinkley’s Lighting Factory has been a familiar presence throughout the magazine’s 40-year history.
Established in 1910, the family owned and operated local iconic business has been crafting custom indoor and outdoor lighting solutions for all architectural and design styles, many of which have been featured editorially on the pages of Phoenix Home & Garden as well as displayed in bold advertisements.
With over 110 years in the business, Hinkley’s has established long-term relationships with the Valley’s leading architects, builders and interiors designers to produce top quality products that can be built from scratch, refurbished from antique fixtures or made using repurposed “found” elements for unique creations that complement any décor.
“The secret to success is to find your niche, and ours is custom, Phoenix-made, personalized business,” says Michael Jackson who started with the company at age 14 and along with his wife Karen has owned Hinkley’s Lighting for more than 20 years. “Not only are all of our products locally made, we also make it a point to recognize and appreciate our return customers.”
An Enduring Partnership
Lasting business models are built on strong relationships. Establishing trust with customers and the professional community requires dedication to excellence and syncing with partners that support mutual goals. Over the past 40 years, Copenhagen Imports, Inc. and Phoenix Home & Garden magazine have teamed up to showcase the simple practicality and elegance of contemporary furniture design. It seems fitting that two of the Valley’s most familiar and trusted brands are both celebrating landmark anniversaries this year.
Since opening their first Arizona showroom in 1970, Copenhagen Imports, Inc. has dedicated 50 years to promoting fresh style concepts in the desert Southwest. When Phoenix Home & Garden rolled out its first issues in 1980, the natural fit between businesses was clear and Copenhagen Imports, Inc. has been a constant presence on the magazine’s pages ever since.
“All of us here at Copenhagen Imports would like to congratulate Phoenix Home & Garden on reaching this significant milestone,” says Jens V. Hansen, son of Erik Hansen one of the company founders.
“In the world of print advertising where publications seem to come and go, Phoenix Home & Garden has managed to endure the test of time. We’re proud to have been associated with them since the very beginning and hope to continue our relationship for many years to come. Our shared success is rooted in strong mutual respect and a common goal of delivering a quality product to our consumer. We here at Copenhagen are looking forward to the next decade and we’ll be partnering with Phoenix Home & Garden all along the way.”

In 1981, Lila Harnett, then the publisher of Phoenix Home & Garden, sold this ad to us. She was impressively persuasive. There was no denying her. And we didn’t. For us, it was a roll of the dice. A speculation in an effort to make ourselves known. The dice favored us and Phoenix Home & Garden has sustained its effectiveness and value through these many years. Tastes, fashion, and even generations have changed. We’ve adapted to present a world-class representation of the finest hand-knotted, artistic rugs to what has become a national audience. Whatever success we’ve enjoyed has come in no small part to our partners at Phoenix Home & Garden. Congratulations on 40 years of publishing.
In 1938, at the enterprising age of 20, Valley resident Jim Berridge Jr. opened Berridge Nurseries and began a life-long commitment to provide a full-service garden center featuring top quality products and expert service. With his strong belief in community support, growth and development, his mission is planted firmly with the family’s third generation, who honors the community commitment and business ideals he set forth more than 80 years ago.
