Four Peaks Oktoberfest

Whether it’s a bratwurst on a bun or a dachshund sprinting for the finish line, there will be plenty of ways to have fun at this celebration of all things Bavarian. Enjoy German food and drinks, a wiener dog race, rides, games and dancing at this event that benefits Tempe Sister Cities, an organization dedicated to sending students abroad. The Bigger Picture

Dr. David Eshar and Dr. Gilad Goldstein of Israel’s Safari Ramat Gan Zoo discuss the plight of the imperiled Eurasian griffon vulture and how they and the Phoenix Zoo are joining together to help save the most threatened raptor in the world. Following this inspiring presentation, take a Safari Cruiser ride to the Savanna Gallery to view the collaborative photo exhibition of stunning images from both institutions, giving guests a glimpse into how though 7,000 miles apart, the Phoenix Zoo and the Safari Ramat Gan Zoo focus their lenses on what bonds them together rather than what sets them apart. $25, 455 N. “William Matthews: Decades”

Spanning over five decades of artistic talent, the exhibition will explore Colorado artist William “Willy” Matthews’ unique ability to capture the essence of remote landscapes and their inhabitants, which has left an indelible mark on the art world. When the fairgrounds light up, Valley dwellers know that fall has finally arrived in Phoenix. But be sure to come prepared. Between the topsy-turvy carnival rides, corn dogs, fried Oreos and the Hot Cheetos pizza, you’ll need a strong stomach to make it through the night, especially if you want to catch the return of the Coliseum Concert Series with Walker Hayes, Brothers Osborne and Ne-Yo scheduled to appear. Steel Magnolias

Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill

“The North Star Changes: Works by Brenda Mallory”
