“William Matthews: Decades”
Through Oct. 20

The iconic image of the American cowboy continues to undergo numerous revisions, much like the Southwestern landscape. Over the last five decades, Colorado-based artist William Matthews has captured those transitions with his paintbrush and watercolors with a body of work that is stunning and, at times, witty. One thing it is not is commonplace. Wed.-Sun., 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Call for ticket prices. Scottsdale’s Museum of the West, 3830 N. Marshall Way, Scottsdale, (480) 686-9539, scottsdalemuseumwest.org

“Summer”
Through Sept. 28

While the sunshine brings overpowering heat to the Southwest, it can also make the outside world seem enchanting. The exquisite beauty of the season comes through in a painting of Brazil’s Elza Burquo House beautifully rendered by Andy Burgess; sculptures by Shaunté Glover; and other works by Sonya Clark, Claudio Dicochea, and Ben Durham. Lisa Sette Gallery, 210 E. Catalina Drive, Phoenix, (480) 990-7342, lisasettegallery.com

“Harry Fonseca: Transformations”
Through April 20

In the late 1970s, the late Nisenan Native American artist Harry Fonseca began his “Coyote” series. The main character in these works, seen as a “trickster” in Native American storytelling, is a metaphor for how one changes and defies society’s preconceived notions. The Heard has gathered the work of this underrated artist, who also explored queer subcultures and the dark side of American history. Tues.-Sun., 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Call for ticket prices. Heard Museum, 2301 N. Central Ave., Phoenix, (602) 252-8848, heard.org
