Simply Santa Fe

Located 7,000 feet above the world in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the enchanting atmosphere of Santa Fe beckons those seeking inspiration, spiritual renewal or a scenic locale to escape the pressures of everyday life.

Take a walk along Canyon Road, a half-mile stretch in the city’s historic downtown district, which features more than 100 galleries showcasing a diverse range of bold, contemporary offerings and traditional Native American works.

Then step inside the nearby Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. Dedicated to the life and legacy of the artist and her distinctive interpretations of the American Southwest’s landscapes, it features an extensive archive of her paintings, drawings and other personal artifacts.

Nature lovers can lace up their boots for a hike through nearby trails or simply soak in the views from the surrounding mountain ranges. And when it’s time to unwind, Santa Fe’s renowned spas and mineral-rich hot springs offer traditional treatments rooted in Native and holistic healing practices — perfect for restoring both body and soul.

You can also find warmth and comfort in the city’s soulful cuisine. The area offers traditional Southwestern fare at its family-owned restaurants, or venture off the beaten path with the city’s variety of pop-up food trucks.

And for those seeking to bring a piece of Santa Fe home, two must-visit destinations stand out:

Glenn Green Galleries

To get a sense of the diversity in Santa Fe’s art scene, you must travel north of its downtown area and visit the Glenn Green Galleries.

The family-run business, which has its roots in Phoenix, opened its first New Mexico location in 1979. In the decades since, it has become known not only for its commitment to creatives and their processes, but also for its eclectic outdoor sculpture garden.

“The large-scale granite sculptures by Khang Pham-New are worth spending time with as a visitor,” says manager and director of Glenn Green Galleries, Kerry Green. “They are carved from one large block of granite and are fluid, flowing forms that change with the light during the day. Granite is one of the most challenging materials to work with, and Khang’s mastery of this unusual medium is breathtaking.”

For the fall season, the gallery will feature works by Diné artist Melanie A. Yazzie and Allan Houser (Chiricahua Apache). 136 Tesuque Village Road, Santa Fe, New Mexico, (505) 820-0008, glenngreen.com
