9 Outrageous Wallpapers That Will Make Your Guests Do a Double-Take

From the slightly sardonic mind of local designer Anthony Williams comes a new wallpaper collection that asks the question, among others, “Wait—is that Justin Bieber in your powder room?”
Williams found himself dreaming up his own wallpapers when he realized the options he wanted simply didn’t exist—yet. “I couldn’t find wallpapers that had the energy and personality that I wanted to inject into certain projects,” he recalls. “Simply put, I think design should be fun and sometimes the design world takes itself too seriously. There seems to be this belief that interior design needs to be either quirky and artsy, or it needs to be serious and beautiful. Well, I’ve never been a fan of boundaries, so I say, ‘Why not be all of them?’”
Here, Williams takes us through his dizzying world of wallpapers.
1. Apocalypse Toile
If I had to choose my favorite from the collection, it would probably be Apocalypse Toile. The artist who created this and most of our other designs, Sarah Hurwitz, did such a phenomenal job of creating exactly what I had in mind—a classic toile print that, when you look closely, depicts a post-apocalyptic world. Plus, I have a slight obsession with Chinese blue-and-white ceramics, which is what inspired the pattern.
2. Glamour Life
This is probably our most popular pattern, which depicts poisonous animals and plants mixed in with some of the indulgences of our modern culture, such as jewels, sweets, and drugs.
3. Critters

This pattern is simply a bunch of animals and plants that are beautiful but surprisingly deadly—like the platypus!
4. Thug Life
This is a fun one. Basically, it’s a toile of Romanesque characters partaking in modern “thug” behaviors, such as playing dice, hanging on the stoop, and shady drug deals. I certainly strive to not take myself too seriously. I accept that they won’t be teaching about my work in future design theory classes, and in 30 years, someone else will likely come along and remodel the spaces we design. So I think, why not make the most of it? There are thousands of beautiful toile wallpapers you can put up, but wouldn’t it be so much more fun to have an elegant toile that depicts a chariot drive-by rather than some mundane bucolic scene?
5. The Warped Series
Designed by Sam Buros, this is a series of 5 classic patterns executed in our warped XAWD fashion. We can’t just do classic stripes—there has to be something a little bit “off.” Each pattern in this series—Stripes, Plaid, Vertical Stripes, Houndstooth and Checkerboard—is available in tons of vibrant colorways.God Save the Biebs
This is a deep cut for internet meme/hip-hop fans. This wallpaper is a painted Renaissance-style pattern depicting what Heaven and Hell might look like. Hell looks like the popular meme of rapper Post Malone choking Justin Bieber in a crowded nightclub.
6. Real Ones

This one depicts iconic peace-keepers throughout history throwing up gang signs, which in my mind communicates the dichotomy of what going against the grain of society looks like.
7. What’s Your Sign?
This sarcastic design just depicts the confusion around the cultural obsession with defining yourself with a “sign.” So we included all sorts of signs, like Chinese Zodiacs, the thumbs-up, the shaka sign, and of course, astrological signs.
8. War on Plants
Simply put we made an absolutely stunning floral pattern using plants that are commonly used to create recreational drugs. I think the people who respond to these kinds of tongue-in-cheek patterns are those who see their home as a way to communicate rather than something they just need to decorate and inhabit. And of course, it helps to have a sense of humor, too!
9. God Save the Biebs
According to the designer, “Not even Michelangelo could have painted a better depiction of heaven and hell,” referencing his quirky pattern featuring Justin Bieber as a godlike figure.
