Meet the New Owners of David E. Adler Fine Rugs in Scottsdale

A couple poses next to fine rugs

After 50 years as a mainstay for designers and homeowners alike, David E. Adler Fine Rugs has new owners. Lindsay Bowman, who began working at the Scottsdale rug and textiles showroom as an intern, took over in October with her husband, John-David. “Within my first week, I fell completely in love with the fine rug industry and can’t imagine myself anywhere else,” Bowman says. With his retirement, Adler has passed the torch of his namesake store, which he founded in 1973, and Bowman says those seeking high-quality and unique rugs will continue to find pieces there that don’t follow trends but set them.

Q&A With Lindsay Bowman of David E. Adler Fine Rugs

Tell us about how you got involved with David E. Adler Fine Rugs.

I started as an intern in 2005 at David E. Adler Fine Rugs while finishing up my interior design degree. Within the first week, I fell completely in love with the fine rug industry and can’t imagine myself anywhere else. I do a little bit of everything around here, from purchasing and selecting rugs, inventory management, shipping rugs to working with designers to find their clients an assortment of rugs.

And you and your husband are co-owners.

My husband, John-David Bowman, recently retired from his career as an educator to help pursue this longtime dream of mine. He is well accomplished in his own right, one being recognized as 2015 Arizona Teacher of The Year. John-David is always up to a challenge and learning all new subjects, so the rug business has been such an exciting new venture for him.

Working together has been an exciting new undertaking and given the relationship a whole new outlet. At first, what seemed like such a crazy thing to do, has turned out to be one of our best decisions we’ve made. We really enjoy working together, and it’s been fun to introduce him to so many of our great clients and teach him every single detail of hand-knotted rugs. There’s never a dull moment in the showroom.

How did the opportunity to take over the business come about?

Owning my own business has been a dream of mine since I was young. After working here for so long, falling in love with rugs and building several great relationships, I found myself unable to be anywhere else. I was totally hooked from day one. As my husband found himself ready to retire at the end of May 2023, it set the complex process of purchasing a business into motion. Months later, it came to fruition, and we are happier than ever.

What’s it like to take over a business from the person who founded it?

It’s been an amazing journey going from a member of the staff to the owner. My husband, along with my co-workers that I’ve worked with for many years and so many of our wonderful clients, have been so incredibly supportive. It’s been an exciting, wild and beyond rewarding experience.

Are there any trends that you’re seeing in textiles that we’ll start seeing in homes in the future?

What sets us apart is our focus on curating rugs that are both high quality and unlike any others you’d find in Arizona, making our inventory versatile and unexpected. Any day of the week, a designer can walk in for several clients and find rugs, from classically traditional to funky modern and everything in between. Our vision gives our great design community the opportunity to set the trends, not follow them.

What’s the most important thing people should consider when shopping for a rug for their home?

This is such a personal and subjective question—it’s all about the client. Are they wanting a statement piece, a rug that adds texture to the room or simply something soft underneath their feet? We place rugs that become the artwork in the room, rugs that are soft and subtle blending with their surroundings and rugs that bring in all the colors of the home. The best, most exciting day is selling a rug that the client least expects. When we pull a rug known as the ‘wild card’ and they fall in love, that’s when you see the real magic happen.
