A Collection of Matchbooks Sparks Arizona Nostalgia

By Lauren Tyda | Photography & Styling by Rob Ballard, Len Loria

“I started collecting matchbooks just before we moved to Arizona in 1971,” recalls the Phoenix resident Randy Hesson. I had no idea the history I might be saving.” For Randy and his wife, artist Dyana Hesson, the colorful cardboard curios are relics of a bygone era. “They are little time capsules, records of places, popular fonts and advertising slogans,” she says. For Randy, beholding the match covers is pure Arizona nostalgia. “They remind me of places such as Farrell’s Ice Cream parlor, fancy establishments we used to dine at; and not-so-fancy places such as Hobo Joe’s. I have one from Mountain Shadows when it was in its heyday before it was torn down and rebuilt. They are all great memories of being a young man in Arizona in the ’70s and ’80s.”
