This Image Evokes the Haunting Beauty of the Monsoon
“I felt a rush of adrenaline, both from fear of lightning and the thought of missing the shot,” recalls Pulitzer Prize-winning local photographer Jack Dykinga of capturing this photo.
“The sunlight broke through enough to illuminate the saguaro and create a rainbow— horizontal lightning fingers sizzling across the dark clouds were the icing on the cake.”
The image evokes the haunting beauty of monsoon season. “My background as a photojournalist is all about informing the reader/viewer—in this case about the majesty and power of a desert storm.”
