HISTORY: On the Veranda owners Sharron Saffert and Diane Capdeville share a passion for what they do, which is creating outdoor spaces for their clients. Before beginning their own business, Diane, a native of Arizona, worked at Mehagian’s Fine Furniture and later had a business importing and selling goods from Mexico and Central America. “I started the business with a neighbor,” she recalls. “We had a love of all things hand-made.” These experiences were the start of something that has continued to evolve over the years. “As time went on, I started working with Sharron, who I had been friends with for many years and who shared my love for gardening, entertaining and spending time in our own outdoor spaces. People kept telling us we should open our own business because there was such a demand in Arizona for the goods we were bringing in,” Diane relates. To that end, they opened On the Veranda in Phoenix in November of 1998 in a space that had previously been a nursery. “It was a spontaneous decision to have a store where we could introduce ways to create unique and interesting outdoor spaces,” Diane notes. “We wanted it to be a place where home and garden meet, and where we could create a collected look that included architectural elements that could be used outside.” Now the pair has relocated to Scottsdale to continue the thriving business they created 28 years ago. “It’s a perfect jewel of a space that allowed us to expand our offerings,” Sharron notes. “We opened in June of 2026.”

MISSION: “Diane and I believed in the concept of outdoor living and using outdoor spaces as extensions of our indoor spaces from the very beginning,” Sharron states. “Our mission is to offer people furnishings and accessories that work for their lifestyle. We dwell on quality, comfort and timeless style and work hand in hand with all our clients, both residential and commercial. We try to help them create their own vision for their outdoor spaces so they blend seamlessly with the indoor spaces,” Diane adds.
SHOWROOM: The Scottsdale showroom formerly housed a flooring business, and the existing wood flooring coupled with creamy white walls make a perfect backdrop for the products they carry. As with the Phoenix location where they launched their business, the black and white theme is prominent, and outdoor areas play a starring role. “We wanted our showroom to make people feel like they’re walking into a beautiful private home filled with unique, one-of-a kind pieces indoors and out,” the owners comment.

GOODS: Furnishings in the 3,000-square-foot showroom are displayed in inviting settings that beckon customers from one area to the next. Included in the enticing mix of offerings are many examples of custom-made iron seating, which can be made to whatever dimensions a client desires, as well as upholstered pieces, marble-topped tables, custom outdoor floor lamps with fabric shades, accent pillows, outdoor throws, and a smattering of antiques ranging from statuary to mirrors, lighting, containers and blue and white porcelain wares. “All of our pieces can be used indoors or out,” Sharron notes.
THE UNEXPECTED: Such unique items as old burlap backdrops from Europe that are painted with colorful trees and attached to wood frames, and a large antique rolling wood dough ‘bowl’ from Germany make wonderful conversation pieces.
INSPIRATION: “All these years I feel that Sharron and I are like thunder and lightning,” Diane says when asked where they find their inspiration. “Whenever we brainstorm, the ideas just start flowing. Inspiration comes from everywhere, including our clients.”

THEN & NOW: When asked about how their game plan now differs from the past, Sharron says every year is different. “Over the years we’ve had to adjust to economic downturns, COVID, and, most recently, tariffs,” Diane points out. “We’ve had to bend and stretch and be ready to adapt, so we’ve become very flexible. What hasn’t changed is that we’re still passionate about what we do, and we still maintain the quality of our products and find interesting new things to bring in. I’d say our vision is the same; it’s just bigger.”
MEANINGFUL MOMENTS: “For so many people, work is just a job. There’s no passion, no buy-in,” Sharron says. “Seeing how happy our customers are, and how what we do has expanded their lifestyle means a lot to us.” Diane adds that the loyalty of their customers is also very rewarding. “They trust us, and even if they don’t need anything, they come in to see us.”
NEXT: Three decked-out patio spaces will add excitement to the big picture this fall. “Our outdoor rooms are more like well-appointed gathering spaces. They’re comfortable and very welcoming, kind of like a big hug,” Sharron says.
