Editor’s Letter for October/November 2025

PHG-Editor-in-Chief-John-Roark

I stand by my wish of one day having a kitchen with an island so deep I would really need to stretch to reach the other side.

For as long as I can remember, this has been my No. 1 desire when I am asked to describe my perfect house. Upon further reflection, the list has grown to include a library filled with books I cannot wait to read, with a special section dedicated to the books I love the most. I’d also love to have a separate little building for a dedicated art studio.

When editing and proofreading our stories, I am aware of how frequently the words “I wanted … we wanted … the client wanted” are part of the narrative. It stands to reason: Whether building new, remodeling or renovating, owners are making their imaginings a reality, reflecting their needs, tastes and—there it is again—wants. And that’s how it should be.

Welcome to our annual Dream Homes issue. The properties featured on the pages ahead represent the expressions of individuals blessed with the imagination and ability to feather their nests and check all the boxes that comprise their perfect vision. From a private resort that lavishes guests with every indulgence, to an inherited childhood homestead that gets the landscape it always deserved, to a stunning compound that includes a working farm (and a lake) and more, these are the manifestations of, “This is what we wanted.” We love the stories behind each, and we are honored to share them with you.

While reconnecting with friends recently, I was asked by their 12-year-old daughter if she could draw my portrait. I was impressed by the results, and I know that I could not draw this well at that age. The artist cited “eyes” as her specialty.

No discussion of dreamy dwellings would be complete without an invitation to join us for a day of inspiration and fun at the annual Phoenix Home & Garden Home Tour, slated for Saturday, Nov. 15. We have a great event in the works, and as always, we look forward to seeing you there. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit phgmag.com/hometour.
