I am frequently asked what trends I see in interior design and decor.

I tend to cringe at the word because by the time a trend is noticeable, it’s on the verge of being yesterday’s news, and it’s always better to be a leader than a follower. I think of trends negatively—for example, any sign written in stylized cursive (“Bless This Mess,” “Family” or the to-be-avoided-at-all-costs “Live, Laugh, Love”). Then there are the big tsunamis that come at us without warning, which history rarely looks favorably upon: Tuscan, anyone? Avocado green? Carpeted bathrooms? 

One thing I have recently noticed, to my great joy and relief, is the return of color. Gradually, incrementally, excitement is coming back to the interior palette. I am reminded of the 1998 movie “Pleasantville,” in which color unexpectedly begins to creep into a complacent black-and-white town, awakening its wholesome citizenry, heightening their senses, sparking their imaginations and forever altering their worldviews. 

Bring on the impertinent orange sofa, ceilings in daring hues and even accent pillows that aren’t afraid to be noticed. These are the interiors that excite me. When I visited the home that graces this issue’s cover, it was like walking into an unanticipated rainbow. Not color for the sake of being different, but embracing unexpected alternatives, reveling in and being awash in rich tones, the crayons in the back row of the box that are not the safe and obvious choices.
