OH, DEER Situated in the quaint village of Redstone, Colorado, is Crystal Farm, a property built in the early 1900s that now houses the 5,000-square-foot studio of Crystal Farm Antler Chandeliers and Furniture. Established in 1980, the business offers rustic-style lighting, accessories and furnishings incorporating antlers naturally shed by deer or elk. Each piece is handcrafted, and some also feature wood from oak, walnut, cherry and pine trees.
The studio—which showcases works-in-progress as well as prototypes—is open to the public; but for those who cannot make it to Redstone, the collection can be viewed online or in the company’s catalog. The craftsmen at Crystal Farm also accommodate custom orders. Pictured here is the Ludwig chandelier, a circular inverted cluster of fallow deer antlers that measures 36" in diameter and 12" in height.
To learn more, stop by the studio at 18 Antelope Road, or log on to

A REAL GEM Benito Loera was ready for a change after a 25-year career in residential construction when he established his own woodworking company in 1998. South Texas Mesquite and Cedar Treasures operates out of a workshop next to his home in San Marcos, Texas. With his son, Daniel, Loera started building small-scale furniture, then began experimenting with inlays. The artisans incorporate inlays using 26 different gemstones, including turquoise, lapis, amethyst and garnet. Today, the father-and-son team and a handful of other trained craftsmen often complete custom work and create such furnishings as chairs, tables and pool tables, as well as decorative boxes and crosses. The Loeras currently are expanding their showroom and expect the new 2,500-square-foot space to be finished this spring. Shown here is a mesquite dining room set embellished with inlaid turqoise. The backs of the chairs sport colorful leather trimmed with nailheads.
