History: “I love design,” says Tamara Johnson, owner of Beau Monde Window Fashions & More—a store specializing in custom window treatments and bedding. After leaving a corporate career, Johnson followed her passion and studied interior design. Initially, she ran her business out of her home as a side gig while working for a furniture store and workroom. She soon realized, however, that there was a need for a custom window treatment and upholstery retailer in the Phoenix area, and opened Beau Monde’s showroom last spring.
Philosophy: Johnson observes that many people want unique fabric treatments but are unsure how to achieve a desired look. “This [store] was my vision, so people could come in and say ‘Wow! You can do that?’” As a result, she developed a design studio and workroom that allow clients to browse through countless textiles, trims and hardware and collaborate with a specialist to create a fabricated piece.
What’s in store: More than 60,000 fabric choices can be found in this 3,100-square-foot showroom. Manufacturers range from S. Harris, Stroheim & Romann, Kravet, and Duralee to Ralph Lauren and Robert Allen. A selection of Southwest-style textiles is grouped together, as is Opuzen’s extravagant line with colors and patterns that can be customized. Shutters, shades, cornices, swags, pillows, headboards and bedding also are offered. In addition, a variety of hardware includes options from Helser Brothers, Brimar, JAB and the company’s own collection, Beau Monde Bling.
