History: Carla Bonner grew up in a quaint town near Portland, Maine, where she was inspired by the Northeast’s Coastal style. After college, she broke into interior design by working at a showroom outside of New York City, and in 2000 moved to Arizona. Feeling that the look and smaller scale of Coastal design would work well in the area’s older homes, Bonner launched Blueseeds earlier this year.
Philosophy: The store offers customers a welcoming, serene atmosphere with merchandise to match. Bonner explains that her concept was to open a boutique where “people want to come back and they feel at home.”
What’s in store: Earthy tones and materials prevail—floors are covered in sisal, walls are decorated with botanical prints, and furnishings display calming blues, tans and creams. Also to be found are such items as sofas manufactured by Quatrine dressed in tightly fitted slipcovers, footstools clad in cowhide, and a leather chair trimmed with nailheads. Salvaged items and antiques are mixed with modern pieces, thanks in large part to Bonner’s semiannual trips to Maine in search of vintage wares. Examples include an old flour sifter that offers a fun way to store remote controls, a collection of antique English cookie molds framed as wall art, and an antique tea chest. The store owner’s flair for durable and inviting furniture is evident in an ottoman she covered in a Dash & Albert rug, and a settee upholstered in a wool blanket made in Maine. The shop also features a comprehensive fabric library. Two interior designers are on staff, and design consultations are available.
