FLOWERING FURNITURECrafting furniture often is viewed as an art form, especially when it comes to the work of such high-caliber artisans as Mark Levin. In a sawdust-covered studio near
Santa Fe, the award-winning woodworker makes one-of-a-kind coffee tables, shelves, seating and more, all showcasing graceful curves and precious woods. Although the pieces are meant to be functional, one would be hesitant to place a drink on a Levin table for fear of causing a spill. The fine furnishings—most of which are custom-made—are available through select galleries around the country; customers also can call or stop by the studio to place orders.
Pictured is Levin’s Handel Flower Petal Desk. Made of walnut and featuring a Danish oil finish, the four-legged piece measures 30" high by 70" wide by 38" deep.

TIME-TESTED TREASURESImporting quality antiques from Latin America as well as from other parts of the world is the forte of Gail Dodge Altman and Charles Boswell, owners of Dos Gallos in
Los Angeles. The duo personally selects unique pieces to display in the firm’s 5,000-square-foot showroom, which boasts a diverse collection of 18th- and 19th-century colonial furnishings, accessories and ceramics. Containers filled with antiques regularly arrive from Guatemala, Honduras, France, Italy, Greece, Belgium and Germany, and a shipment from Spain is expected in November. The company also crafts such custom furnishings as tables, chairs and buffets.
Pictured here from the top are a late-18th-century carved Navarese chest in walnut, imported from Spain; a custom-made Portugese pedestal table in oak (also available in mahogany, walnut and alder); and, from Guatemala, a carved four-drawer console crafted from tropical cypress.
