In addition to crafting architectural miniatures that often are inspired by churches and missions, Cardinale collects a range of devotional art. In his New Mexico home, for example, the artist displays his rendition of the Cistercian Abbey of Poblet in Catalonia, Spain. The small scale of the piece, which measures 20" high, 4 1/2" wide and 4 1/2" deep, is evident when compared to the bookcase
on which it sits.

Although Cardinale spends hours researching the historical buildings he crafts, the sculptures are not meant to be replicas. Here, the artist’s La Capilla del Nacimiento del Niño Jesus, which is based on a church outside Santa Fe, is displayed with a collaborative work of a cemetery he did with his wife of 43 years, PJ. “I need to live to 100 because there are so many churches I want to build,” he says.
