Although the main house was new construction—designed and built to look old—the two-bedroom guest house originally was a historic mill. While the structure was completely remodeled, it maintains the exterior’s old-time look.

The indoor lap pool, surrounded by natural sandstone, uses a non-chemical filtration system. A raised spa with a waterfall edge flows into the pool. Behind the spa, a sitting area with a kiva fireplace and large window offers a place to enjoy views of a meadow on the property’s east side.

A large butcher block-topped island and Spanish concrete floor tiles lend character to the kitchen. Overhead, a diamond-shaped skylight washes ceiling vigas in natural light. “I design from the inside out, according to lifestyle, rather than fitting a lifestyle behind a facade,” says Midyette. “I fell in love with the freedom of design and the lack of prescribed relationships in Southwest style.”

A curving adobe and brick stairway leads from a lower terrace to the main house and guest house.

The formal dining room features a plaster cove ceiling with a scalloped effect and walls of natural clay plaster. A signature element in Midyette’s designs is the raised kiva fireplace, which offers warmth and visual pleasure at the level of seated diners.

The master bath has a small kiva fireplace, as well as a whirlpool tub. The ceiling is of wood planks in a herringbone pattern accented with large vigas. Tile wainscoting and pebble tile flooring are other natural elements.

A highlight of the guest house’s living/dining area is a raised double kiva fireplace. The large gracefully curved adobe form contains two separate fireplaces, one facing the living portion and the other facing the dining area.

The entry foyer is filled with light from a large circular skylight above a staircase featuring a handcrafted wrought-iron railing. Located on the lower level are the indoor pool, two guest suites, garage, mechanical and laundry rooms, and a wine cellar.
