Committed to kitchens that are alive and festive, Smith works closely with Carol Buto Designs on all of his homes, “defining and redefining the space until it’s just right,” he says. Here, azul (blue) tile is used extensively as a reflection of what would have been found in a centuries-old residence. The range hood is combed plaster.
The entry hall colonnade sets the tone for interiors of this authentic Spanish hacienda, which features cantera columns, hand-plastered conch shell niches, and intricate floor tile patterns, including a pair of tile “rugs” flanking the front door. The ceiling is of Saltillo pavers and beams.
The painted design on the dining room’s groin-vaulted ceiling was
created by Smith and executed by artisan Robert O’Connell, another
Phoenix Home & Garden Master of the Southwest. The motif on the
ceiling is reflected in the inlay of the dining room table below.
Flooring is in a basket-weave pattern.
A sense of serenity prevails in the master bathroom, where a centerpiece spa tub is encased in tile. Smith’s goal was to create “a place where one can free up the mind, start the day with organized thoughts, or simply take stock in the day’s ending.”
