Committed to kitchens that are alive and festive, Smith works closely with Carol Buto Designs on all of his homes, “defining and redefining the space until it’s just right,” he says. Here, azul (blue) tile is used extensively as a reflection of what would have been found in a centuries-old residence. The range hood is combed plaster.

The entry hall colonnade sets the tone for interiors of this authentic Spanish hacienda, which features cantera columns, hand-plastered conch shell niches, and intricate floor tile patterns, including a pair of tile “rugs” flanking the front door. The ceiling is of Saltillo pavers and beams.

The painted design on the dining room’s groin-vaulted ceiling was created by Smith and executed by artisan Robert O’Connell, another Phoenix Home & Garden Master of the Southwest. The motif on the ceiling is reflected in the inlay of the dining room table below. Flooring is in a basket-weave pattern.

A sense of serenity prevails in the master bathroom, where a centerpiece spa tub is encased in tile. Smith’s goal was to create “a place where one can free up the mind, start the day with organized thoughts, or simply take stock in the day’s ending.”

In the morning room, Saltillo tile takes on a variety of forms as it covers the floor and also clads the hearth and surrounds the opening of its fireplace. The design is by Smith. However, “The end result is a product of a craftsman who was allowed to put his own hands on it,” he notes.

The range hood in this Scottsdale kitchen showcases a combination of hand-painted terra-cotta and authentic Talavera tiles.

Believing that entrances need to set the tone for what lies beyond, Smith paid special attention to this one with such features as tile wainscoting and brick detailing.

Interior and exterior details are important elements in all Barry Smith-designed homes. Here, a shell niche creates a sense of discovery.
