History—Greek-born sculptor, painter, printmaker and poet Agnese Udinotti founded the gallery within a year after earning her master’s degree in art history from Arizona State University (ASU). Schooled in abstract expressionism—which she says was the “aesthetic of choice” of the 1960s—she continues to explore that genre in her own figurative paintings and sculpture, and in the works of artists her gallery represents. Her work, too, is featured here.

Opening the gallery so early in her career did not garner universal acceptance, Udinotti recalls. There were those “who thought that an ‘unimportant artist’ had no business telling the world where aesthetic strength lies,” she comments.

Today, she takes satisfaction in the fact that artists of the caliber of internationally renowned sculptor Stephen De Staebler are represented by Udinotti Gallery. Her endeavors, too, have won accolades from various quarters, including the Prize of Liberty from Greece and a Distinguished Achievement Award from ASU; in addition, her artworks are found in state, national and international collections.

Four years ago, she created the Udinotti Museum of Figurative Art in Scottsdale, an entity separate from the gallery, as a way to give back what her adopted country had given her, she says.

Specialty—Contemporary art, including paintings, ceramics, sculpture and more, and, at times, tribal art.

Artists represented—Among the gallery’s 15 artists are Jeff Bertoncino, Stephen De Staebler, James Pile, Don Reitz, Agnese Udinotti and Wanxin Zhang.
