Way out west
The George Phippen Memorial Foundation and Phippen Museum host the 36th-annual “Phippen Museum Western Art Show & Sale,” May 28-31, on the grounds of the historic Courthouse Plaza in Prescott. The event showcases more than 120 Western-style artists from across North America presenting art of the American West in oil, watercolor, acrylic, mixed media, pastels, sculpture and drawings. Among the works featured is “Home of the Brave” by Gordon Snidow, a gouache (mixed-medium, heavy acrylic) painting, 11" high x 13" wide (pictured).
A Miniature Masterpieces Invitational Art Show & Sale, Denim to Diamonds dinner and art auction, and children’s activities also are planned, as well as Quick Draw art demonstrations where professional artists create works of art in only 45 minutes and then auction them to the crowd. GEOMETRY RULES
Focusing on a distinctively “less is more” aesthetic, Grant Wiggins’ paintings are characterized by clean edges, strong geometric shapes and vibrant color combinations, as seen here in “Ifx Xypilekk,” an acrylic on canvas that measures 30" high x 24" wide. Instead of naming his paintings “Untitled,” the Tempe artist deliberately chooses titles that don’t mean anything—they are merely combinations of letters. His work is on exhibit in “Circles With Corners,” through May 15, at Soyal Gallery in Scottsdale. For more information, visit soyalgallery.com, or call (480) 540-7506. |
