San Diego Museum of Art—1450 El Prado, Balboa Park, San Diego, sdmart.org, (619) 232-7931. “Oceanic Art,” through Jan. 3, 2010; and “New Light on the Old Masters,” through Jan. 3.

San Diego Natural History Museum—1788 El Prado, San Diego, sdnhm.org, (619) 255-0189. “Baja California,” featuring imagery by Ralph Lee Hopkins, National Geographic photographer, author and expedition leader, through Jan. 3; and “Darwin: Evolution/Revolution,” which celebrates the life and work of the great 19th-century British naturalist, Nov. 7-Feb. 28.

Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art—7374 E. Second St., Scottsdale, scottsdalearts.org, (480) 994-ARTS. “Nick Cave: Meet Me at the Center of the Earth,” through Nov. 29; “Visions: Juxtapositions,” through Jan. 3; “Unexpected Wegman,” through Jan. 24; and “Looking Through the Other End of a Telescope,” through Jan. 24.

Sharlot Hall Museum—415 W. Gurley St., Prescott, sharlot.org, (928) 445-3122. “Paint! Breaking the Buckskin Ceiling,” through Nov. 15, 2010, showcases American Indian artwork by Jesse T. Hummingbird (Cherokee), Judith Durr (Choctaw), Baje Whitehorse Sr. (Navajo) and Michael Kabotie (Hopi). Individually and collectively, these Arizona artists are said to challenge and expand the meaning of “Indian art.”

Shemer Art Center—5005 E. Camelback Rd., Phoenix, (602) 262-4727. “Drawn,” a juried exhibition of multimedia works by Arizona artists; and “Mary Lyverse: Abstract Paintings & Drawings,” Nov. 30-Jan. 5.

Superstition Mountain Museum—4087 N. Apache Trail, Apache Junction, superstitionmountainmuseum.org, (480) 983-4888. The annual Authors and Artists Gathering takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 7-8, with entertainment, refreshments, and Arizona authors and artists on hand to sign books and original art.

Tilt Gallery—919 W. Fillmore St., Phoenix, tiltgallery.com, (602) 716-5667. “The Grand Old Plastic Camera: A Retrospect by Neal Winter,” Nov. 6-Dec. 18, features gelatin silver limited-edition prints. The photographer uses a plastic or toy camera called a “Holga,” which he says has “magical” properties. Guests can meet Winter at First Friday receptions from 6 to 9 p.m. Nov. 20 and Dec. 4.

Wilde Meyer Gallery—4142 N. Marshall Way, Scottsdale, wildemeyer.com, (480) 945-2323. “Happy Trails,” through Nov. 4, features works by Linda Carter Holman, Amy Novelli, Robert Ransom, Jim Nelson and Thom Ross. Carter Holman also is on hand from 7 to 9 p.m. Nov. 5 to debut new paintings, prints and products in “La Buena Vida.” Handmade jewelry by Pam Evans, wearable textile art by Ana Lisa Hedstrom, and fashion-inspired paintings by Melinda Hall and Lori Faye Bock are showcased in “For Fashion,” which opens with a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Nov. 5 and continues through Nov. 30. “Mixed Bag of Mixed Media,” Nov. 11-30, features “green” art creations made with found and nontraditional materials by Charles Davison, Steven Hofberger and Rick Lussier. An opening reception is planned from 7 to 9 p.m. Nov. 11.

Zuva Gallery—34505 N. Scottsdale Rd., Scottsdale, zuvagallery.com, (480) 488-6000. New work by Zimbabwean sculptor and artist Dominic Benhura is in the spotlight Nov. 1-Dec. 31. The African sculptor is known for his Contemporary style, which captures the essence of human movement, form and emotion in stone.
