FAMILY FASCINATION
Widely recognized for her tile-making skills, the late Hopi ceramist Nampeyo passed on her knack for precision and symmetry to many of her family members. Kim and Pat Messier say she was instrumental in the resurgence of Hopi pottery in the late 1800s, as she brought back old-style designs. The Fred Harvey Co. promoted her work, and she was the first Hopi potter to be known by name, they add.

Darlene James, Nampeyo’s great-great-granddaughter, made this tile for John C. Hill. | Nampeyo’s own work includes this artful tile depicting a kachina. |
