Glass Crush

Glass left over from the manufacture of windows and solar products has taken on a new, more glamorous life.

Fireclay Tile, a California company, is turning these pre-consumer remnants into its handmade “Crush” line of 100-percent recycled glass tiles.

Used for backsplashes, countertops, shower stalls and in other imaginative ways, the sustainable line gets it name from how it is made. The company obtains the glass from industries located within a 20-mile radius of its manufacturing facility, where it is later “crushed,” processed, tinted with color and kiln-fired.

Crush tiles come in 40 colors and 17 shapes and sizes. Pictured is a kitchen backsplash made up of 2" by 6" tiles in four colorways with names inspired by nature: Forget Me Not, Willow, Icicle, and Blueberry.

The product can be obtained through Originate Natural Building Materials Showroom in Tucson, (520) 792-4207; originatenbm.com. Check fireclay.com for other locations or ordering information.
