GREEN UNDERFOOT

Its geometric floral pattern has a Modernistic feel, but how this carpet from Shivhon was made is rooted in history.

This pattern, called Spinning, and other rugs from the company are crafted in Nepal using centuries-old Tibetan hand-weaving methods and sustainable natural materials, such as wool from Tibetan sheep. Colors for dyes are derived from minerals and plants, and also from environmentally friendly Swiss dyes.

Carpets are available in a variety of sizes, from 4 by 6 feet to 10 by 14 feet, and also can be custom-made. For purchasing information and to see other rugs, go online to shivhon.com, or call (808) 381-5102.

WORDS OF WISDOM

Modern technology has made performing many tasks quick and efficient. However, advances such as air conditioning often can have negative impacts on the environment. Ways to merge efficiency with energy conservation can be found in New Green Home Solutions: Renewable Household Energy and Sustainable Living (Gibbs Smith, Publisher) by Dave Bonta and Stephen Snyder.

The text focuses on several facets of the home, including heating, cooling and electricity, as the authors consider these the biggest energy offenders. In addition, they point to the act of generating electricity as a leading cause of air pollution.

The book’s Solar Electricity chapter presents ways to lessen one’s carbon footprint by harnessing the power of the sun for residential energy needs, which can be different for each home. Obtaining an energy audit and examining annual energy bills are among suggestions for estimating exact consumption.

Renewable energy design, effective insulation, and efficient appliances could reduce energy demands in the home by more than 60 percent, the authors write.
