WINSOME WALLS

Natural sand appears in dramatic swirls on the elegant Eva wall treatment from York Wallcoverings’ Venezia Collection by Antonina Vella.

Seen in raised relief, the wallcovering’s pattern of sand adheres to its paper background with nontoxic glue; a clear coating, which is low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs), keeps the grains of sand from accidentally being rubbed away. In this way, the pattern is “locked into” the paper, says company spokesman LeRue Brown.

Also low-VOC are the water-based inks that lend the product its color, in this case a pearlized hue, Brown adds. The wallpaper backing is “green” as well, for its paper pulp is derived from trees that are grown in managed forests.

Breathable and mold-resistant, Eva, pictured here in Pearl, is one of six colorways. York Wallcoverings are available at major paint stores and decorating outlets, including Dunn-Edwards, Lowe’s, Sherwin-Williams and Frazee Paint. Hertford Arm Chair
RECLAIMED AND REBORN

Turning House Furniture is creating new pieces from vintage wood and in turn helping the environment. The company produces its wares from old-growth lumber used in flooring, beams and other structures found in abandoned factories, tobacco warehouses, plants and mills.

Company sources equate what comes out of a single reclaimed building to as many as 19,000 trees that do not have to be cut down. Pictured is a trio of chairs made from salvaged Appalachian hardwoods.

Turning House Furniture is a member of the Sustainability Furnishings Council. For ordering information and to view products, visit turninghousefurniture.com, or call (276) 627-2701. Pieces also can be ordered online at horchow.com.
