TABLE TALKCool metal in angular Modern shapes meets the warmth and irregular forms of knotted wood in this versatile piece (it functions as a bench or coffee table) from Series I, a line of eco-conscious custom furniture.
Designed by architects Hayes McNeil
and Christoph Kaiser of Phoenix-based Plus Minus Studio, the collection of desks, tables and benches is made from recycled and reclaimed materials. Sleek furniture bases had their start as scrap steel, McNeil says. Tops, made from redwood or hickory, originally were parts of projects that had been dismantled, such as old bridges.
“We only buy older salvaged wood,” the architect adds. “By reusing materials that would otherwise rot or rust in landfills, we are basically making beautiful functional objects with no impact on the environment.”
The furniture pictured has a powder-coated steel base and a reclaimed hickory top sealed with eco-friendly beeswax. It measures 80" wide, by 23" deep, by 15" high. For details call, (602) 909-0826. To see other Series I furniture examples, visit

WOOD WORKSFrom Copenhagen Imports comes this stylish—and green—choice for the dining room. The new Brera table and Hilton chairs are made in Italy from American walnut that is said to come from responsibly managed sources, with finishes that are low in volatile organic compounds, or VOCs.
“The emphasis on this table and chair set has been on the simplicity and beauty of the natural walnut,” says Copenhagen Imports’ Jacki Mckee. “We feel they will transition well into Southwest, Transitional or Contemporary interiors.” The table pictured measures 72" long by 42" wide; three other sizes are available.
