WINSOME THREESOME

Artist Marsia Holzer scours the beaches of Long Island’s famed Hamptons for pieces of driftwood, which she later casts in various metals, including bronze, to create organic-looking lamp bases. The 31-inch-high Nickel Driftwood Lamps shown here are made of nickel-plated recycled aluminum. Shades are natural linen. For buying information or to learn about other Holzer lighting, call Marsia Holzer Studio, (212) 431-9343, or check marsiaholzer.com..

RECLAIM, RECYCLE, REUSE

Burnes Home Accents has turned to discarded but still useful wood and plastic for its new Decor Essentials picture frames. Complete with distressed nail holes and other reminders of their former uses, the wood examples are made from material reclaimed from old warehouses, buildings, bridges and shipping pallets. The plastic frames are produced from non-biodegradable items that
otherwise would clog landfills, a company source says. To order, call (877) 643-7263, or visit burnesofboston.com.

WORDS OF WISDOM

Does the notion of a carbon footprint have you walking in circles? Author and sustainability expert Joanna Yarrow brings this term into clear focus in How to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint: 365 Simple Ways to Save Energy, Resources, and Money (Chronicle Books).

Yarrow defines carbon footprint as the amount of carbon dioxide emitted in our daily lives during myriad activities, from heating and lighting our homes and workplaces, to powering the appliances we use in them, to traveling between these places. These carbon emissions are largely caused by burning fossil fuels, she indicates. They are released into the atmosphere, concentrate there in overly large amounts, and contribute to the threat of global warming.

With understandable text and colorful diagrams, Yarrow’s book  outlines hundreds of easy ways to “trim” one’s carbon footprint. For example, the author writes, “Use a task lamp to focus light just where you want it, rather than lighting up an entire room.” One might try it when reading this engaging book.
