This master bedroom addition features a neutral palette balanced with textures and subtle patterns to create a calm space and highlight the owners’ collection of African art. Two layers of motorized window shades are recessed into the soffits to provide light control.  A new linear gas fireplace, recessed TV, lighting, audio, and motorized window coverings are all controlled via remote from the bedside.

Residence less than 3,500 sq. ft.

Winner - Ernesto Garcia, ASID
Company: Ernesto Garcia Interior Design, LLC

My clients moved to Arizona from a large suburban home in Dallas and purchased a medium-size residence in a lake community. Having sold most of their furnishings, their main objective was to simplify their life functionally and visually. For them, this meant a cleaner, uncluttered Contemporary-style home. The project included total interior design of living room, dining room, kitchen, breakfast nook, family room and powder room. Through the years, the couple had acquired an extensive collection of contemporary Texan art and vernacular objects. Incorporating their art collection and objects into their new home was an essential part of the program. With a blank slate, and through a restrained design approach, all spaces were created with a minimal number of necessary furnishings; and major pieces were custom-designed to suit space requirements and scale.

This home celebrates the client’s passion for Art Deco, Old Hollywood Glamour and superior quality in all elements.  To create backdrops with a subtle shimmer, wall finishes and ceiling details have a slight metallic striae finish. Honed-limestone floors allow the furnishings and fabrics to take center stage, while sophisticated lacquer-finished furniture and accents of purple and fuchsia add to the sense of drama. Introducing Art Deco elegance into a Spanish Colonial structure presented a unique challenge.  To bridge the gap, ceiling details were accented with charcoal brown, and vaults and arches were treated with decorative paint, resulting in architecture and interior design that are mutually enhanced.

This modern British invasion came to life through the use of bright, eye-popping color and graphic design. The clients, originally from England, wanted something that would remind them of home while making a bold design statement. This was accomplished with unique designs, such as the pink and orange Union Jack wallcovering in the powder room, pictured. The project scope included space-planning, lighting design, hard surface and wall-finish selections, custom cabinetry and furniture, accessorizing and artwork throughout.

Model Spaces
Winner - Kristin Fredstrom and Lindsay Murray, Allied Members ASID
Company: Est Est Inc.

Our client desired a different design style to showcase floor plans that would push the boundaries from their conventional models yet still appeal to their target home buyers. The scope of the project encompassed a full design schematic, including the selection of materials and finishes to furnish a luxury model home. The blend of contemporary and rustic elements created a soft, organic aesthetic that was evident throughout.

Total Remodel
Winner - Claire Ownby, ASID
Company: Ownby Design

We were asked to redesign and furnish this home with the goal of opening up the floor plan for casual indoor/outdoor living. In the programming phase, we discovered that we would need to balance the couple’s differing style preferences: one person asking for a Modern and minimal look, and the other wanting a warm and comfortable feel.

To open up the floor plan, we removed the bar and the walk-in pantry, installed multi-slide doors along the back of the house, and moved the dining area from the living room into the kitchen. One of the main focal points became the new floating two-sided fireplace between the living room and family room, which reinforced the connection of the two rooms. To balance the clients’ differing aesthetic preferences, we used the repetition of a simple palette of textured materials combined with warming amber-hued accents in both finishes and furnishings.

Kitchen
Winner - Anita Lang, Allied Member ASID
Company: IMI Design Studio

The renovation goal was to create a highly functional kitchen with a sophisticated modernistic approach. Clean-lined cabinetry with integrated hardware was executed in both grained wenge and ribboned gray Zebrano. Lighting was built in to highlight the beauty of the woods and illuminate work surfaces. Simple charcoal-toned Caesarstone was used in waterfall-edge countertops along with limestone-clad walls for textural interest. The hood’s asymmetrical design incorporates the vent into linear shelves anchored by a vertical line of steel.

Bathroom
Winner - Traci Shields, ASID
Company: Friedman & Shields

Creating a luxurious master bath required redefining the existing space and adding dynamic architectural features. The clients wanted a calming, spa-like retreat, along with more function and storage. Their wish list included a large two-person shower and tub, full-length dressing mirror, separate toilet room with storage, improved lighting, and a view of the TV from the vanities and tub. Constructing custom cabinetry allowed the TV to be integrated into a corner structure between two vanities. Incorporating numerous existing windows and skylight into the new design of this elongated space became an integral part of the design.

Outdoor Space
Winner - Sherry Hauser, ASID
Company: hHh Inc.

The clients requested an inviting exterior front entry and patios with an interior feel. The backyard’s challenge was spacing, as pedestrian access was needed in front of the new fireplace. The designer specified the fireplace style and size, relocated the barbecue area, assisted with pot selection and brought in accessories. Five new pieces of custom furniture made of reclaimed wood  were added, along with new chairs in the fireplace and dining areas. The end result: inviting and stylish spaces with a calming resort feel.

Furniture
Winner - Kacie Lilley, ASID, Stacy Meisterheim, Allied Member ASID
Company: Est Est Inc.

The goal was to create a dining table from a pair of antique wooden and metal gates. The challenges included the size requirements for the table, the open cut-out design and the need for a base that was structurally sound and aesthetically cohesive.  A “new” wood frame with inset glass created the necessary width for the table, which has become the treasured centerpiece of the client’s home.

The design objective was to create an architectural feature to replace the typical stairwell while respecting budget restrictions. A 26-foot-tall blade of 1/2" hot rolled steel that intersects all three stories unifies the stairwell and makes a dynamic statement in the once-typical and cluttered area. Water-jetted horizontal slots allow negative space to create an interesting pattern, permit light to travel into the stairwell and provide stair climbers a peek at the space ahead. By using only cleverly implemented steel, no other adornment was necessary; this met with budget requirements while providing a modern aesthetic. Moving simple handrails to the outer wall kept the metal art piece visually uncluttered and satisfied code requirements.
