RING LEADERWhen it comes to a powder room, “You really shouldn’t be afraid to create a fantastical space with a lot of whimsy,” says interior designer Eric Bron, ASID.
He did that, and his entry won a first-place award in an ASID design competition.
Bron based the design for this small room on a mountain retreat noted in the book
The Lord of the Rings. He visually enlarged the space through material choices and the use of rounded elements. For example, rectangular glass tiles with an iridescent quality clad the walls and rise up to cover the rounded ceiling.
The tiles create the optical illusion of going beyond the arched Venetian plaster rear wall, something Bron happily admits was a purely “serendipitous” effect.
Adding more drama to the room are a stone-topped redwood burl vanity featuring a front panel inset with stone; a curvaceous glass vessel sink; an organic-looking doorknob; and sconces with glass “wrapped” into cones. The
pièce de résistance is a round space-reflecting mirror.
“It’s a big gold ring,” reminiscent of The Lord of the Rings, explains the designer.
