BookshelfInterior designer and author David Naylor shows how you can mix the old with the new in
Old World Interiors: A Modern Interpretation (Gibbs Smith, Publisher). Naylor is based in New Mexico but incorporates influences from all over the world in his work, including Tibetan rugs, African fertility masks, Moroccan lamps and more.
Many of Naylor’s designs, which are shown throughout the book, prove that you do not need to own antiques to achieve Old World style; new pieces custom-made to look old can have a similar effect. For instance, the author includes several examples of rustic wood cabinetry that have been custom-carved for clients.
Repurposing found objects offers another way to blend styles. Pieces shown run the gamut from coffee tables that started out as Mexican cog gears in a sugar mill, to sinks made from chunks of granite found at a homesite.
When it comes to style, there’s no need to choose between Old World and Contemporary. Naylor explains how to combine the two to achieve a personal look.
