TRUE SOUTHWEST

Nestled among colossal boulders and native flora in the backyard of a home in Carefree, Arizona, rests this tranquil waterfall. Donna Winters of Enchanted Garden Landscape Inc. took advantage of the existing terrain and brought in additional rocks to ensure that the home and garden blended with the surroundings instead of distracting from them. The landscape architect and her team used topographical maps and aerial photographs to make certain that each rock removed during construction was put back in the exact place from which it was taken.

Cacti and flowering shrubs bring variety to the predominantly neutral landscape, while the pond provides ambient sound and nourishment for local animals. Frequented by such wildlife as butterflies, javelinas and the occasional bobcat, the waterfall is something of a meeting place. This setting embodies the serene—and, at times, exciting—nature of the desert.
