A Planting Bed Morphs Into an Alfresco Bath

Situated between two guest rooms on a lush Phoenix property, this outdoor area once held a garden bed. While traveling throughout Bali and Thailand, where outdoor showers are prevalent, homeowner Kristin Austin-Jacob was inspired to build a version of her own.

The structure was to be attached to the house and accessible from both guest suites. Walls would be high enough to offer privacy, but the overall dimensions needed to be kept in check so as not to obstruct views from inside the home.

The shower’s perimeter walls were constructed to match the home’s thick adobe walls. A custom iron gate features French writing “to give it that great European country feel,” remarks Austin-Jacob. The alfresco room features a built-in bench, bronze rain showerhead, pebble flooring, a black flagstone “bath mat” and a mural of hand-painted tiles.

Mature maple trees that have been on the property for years provide a picturesque canopy, especially when the leaves change color in fall. Cats claw vines scrambling up the wall and a hanging pot filled with pink cyclamen and blue lobelia further enhance the setting.
