A House Addition Serves as the Impetus for a Backyard Change

With a newly added wing built on to an existing ramada, the owners of this Paradise Valley, Arizona, home were ready to update their backyard. Landscape architect Donna Winters came on board to rework the grounds.

“Our goal was to diminish the height and harshness of the new building in relationship to the existing grades,” explains Winters. This included removing a pond near the base of the steps and raising the flooring level to improve drainage.

Autumn Blend flagstone, chosen for its neutral desert tones, was used for paving, and select stone granite boulders were layered into the slope to match existing ones. The area was revegetated, and a specimen plant was installed in front of the addition’s bare wall.

The treelike Yucca rostrata serves as a focal point, while such desert plants as prickly pear cacti and red-blooming giant crown of thorns complement the design. Purple lantana softens the hardscape.
