Creating magic on the patio from the inside out

The homeowners love to spend time outside enjoying their view of nearby Camelback Mountain, so interior designer Mimi Tibbs suggested creating an outdoor living area that reflected their surroundings.

By working off the Contemporary architecture of the house, Tibbs and landscape architect Donna Winters wanted to incorporate furniture, sculptural cacti and organic materials to define the space.

A raised garden, planted with a massing of golden barrel cacti in a rhythmic pattern, looks like a work of natural art. Durable outdoor furnishings and slate flooring complete the picture.

Golden barrels come to life in a planting bed filled with black Mexican beach pebbles. Behind it, Winters added Arizona organ pipe cacti, ocotillo and an Argentine mesquite tree to enhance the setting.
