BRANCHING OUT Larger vegetation is ideal for use as screening. Here, tall-growing Mexican bird of paradise (background) obscures the view of a neighboring house, while still allowing in light. Additional containers were incorporated to create a lush-looking patio garden. TIP: Don’t be afraid to mix it up when it comes to plant combinations. In the far right pot, easy-to-grow potato vine is paired with eggplant, which produces eye-catching fruits and blossoms. | |

| SETTING THE SCENE To dress up patio areas, consider potted plants that complement the existing vegetation, suggests Jamie Schmitt of Enchanted Garden Inc. In this yard, tall specimens such as a ficus tree and yucca soften the hardscape and frame a view.

TIP: Avoid using saucers under containers, as they store water that
attracts mosquitoes. To help trap minerals that can stain flooring
after watering, place two or three coffee filters over the drainage
holes inside the pots.
