ASK THE EXPERTS

Q - When is the best time of day to water plants in the Phoenix area?

A - Master Gardener Christine Nuñez, environmental manager, city of Surprise, Ariz., provides the following information from the Arizona Master Gardener Manual: “The best time to water is at night or very early in the morning when wind, evaporation and air temperatures are lower than at midday. In the evening, do not wet foliage; this can encourage the growth of fungus or mildew, making plants unsightly and jeopardizing their health.” Access other water conservation information, including fun projects for kids, on the city of Surprise water conservation site at surpriseaz.gov/index.aspx?NID=134.
