Ocotillo

Q&A: ASK THE EXPERTS

Q. What time of year can I prune my ocotillo?

A. Dead or diseased parts can be removed as needed at any time. However, other pruning is not recommended, according to MCCE Master Gardener Olin Miller. Cutting the canes back will destroy the growing tips, where blooms normally would appear. It also will result in spindly growth from the cut ends and destroy the natural shape of the plant.
